My mom’s always wanted to dress up a dog. I’ve been fighting it for years, I personally consider most pets in clothing to look ridiculous and I really only consider it cute with tiny dogs in sweaters to keep them warm. But Halloween is different, most dog costumes are pretty funny. The hot dog costumes crack me up every time. The costumes where the dog has to wear some sort of hat are all stupid, dogs always look so miserable in those. So although I had a few rules, I told mom we could attempt a costume on our dog this year for a quick photo.
All the pet costumes at Target were half off after Halloween, so we decided to see how our dog would react to a simple shirt with a jack-o-lantern face. Mom was excited and hopeful, repeatedly saying “For all we know, we’ll get it on him and he’ll like it.” I reminded her we don’t have a little purse puppy we can dress up, we have a medium sized doofus who’ll probably try to eat the shirt. But for $4, it was worth seeing how he’d react, and I hoped I could get him to sit still long enough so I could get a photo of him wearing it.
I wouldn’t say he loved wearing the shirt, he loved the attention Mom and I gave him while he was in it. The shirt is hilariously huge on him, we could only find an x-tra large and it looks like we stuck a regular human t-shirt on him. But it was pretty adorable, I’ve gotta admit. We didn’t leave it on him for very long, so he hadn’t tried eating it or squirming out of it, but I don’t doubt it’d happen if we tried making him wear the shirt longer than a couple minutes.
Though if I ever find a hot dog costume in his size, I’m totally buying it for him.
